SAN SALVADOR, July 1, 2008.- This time was
Canada who came from a 0-2 deficit to
defeat Puerto Rico 22-25, 23-25, 25-23,
25-19 y 15-11, in Pool A of the U-1
NORCECA Men’s Continental Championship.
Two consecutive victories secure the
Canadians a visit to the playoffs with one
more match to play.
Not only the Canadians reverted from a 0-2
but in the tie-breaker they changed sides
down 4-8 and went on to convert 11 of the
next 14 chances.
“We made the defensive changes at the
corners and our attackers started to hit
with more consistency against a defense
that looked tired at the end,” said Chris
Green, the Canadian coach.
“It was a huge victory for us because we
have beaten a team who dominates the
fundamentals of the game,” he said.
Meanwhile, Carlos Rodríguez blamed the
lack of blocking in the crucial moments.
“At the end the bettehr physical condition
and height of our rivals proved to be the
difference. I don’t think it was a lack of
confidence,” said the Puerto Rican coach.
The best scorers for the winners were
Joren Zeeman (17), Marc Howatson (16),
Rudy Verhoeff (14) and Jason DeRocco (11).
The Puerto Ricans had their best scorer in
their captain Omar Rivera with 23, and
Sequiel Sánchez (17) and Emanuel Batista
(14). |
